Things to do in Nice
- Start your trip by exploring Nice's Old Town, or Vieux Nice. This bewitching jumble of streets and buildings is the heart of the city, and you'll find plenty of restaurants here as well as the famous Cours Saleya flower market.
- One of Europe's most celebrated – and photographed – beachfronts, the Promenade des Anglais is the toast of Nice. Built by the British in the 18th century, it's now called "La Prom" by locals and feels like the epitome of French Riviera sophistication.
- The French Riviera has inspired countless painters and you can learn more about some of them here. Don't miss the Musee National Marc Chagall, the Musee Matisse or the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
- If you love French churches, Nice delivers the goods. The impressive Cathédrale de Sainte Réparate, or Nice Cathedral, is known for its three organs, while the Russian Orthodox Cathedral is striking.
- There's no longer a Castle on Castle Hill, but it's still worth a visit for its spectacular panoramas over Nice. You can reach the hill via a walkway from the Old Town.
- Want to learn more about Nice's history? Visit Villa Massena, a shrine to opulence on the Promenade des Anglais which traces Nice's history from the 18th century to the early 20th.
- Italy might be known for its piazzas but the places of Nice give it a run for its money. Explore the Place Massena, often used for outdoor concerts and public celebrations, and Place Garibaldi, lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and antiques shops.
- Need to get out of the city? Hop on the 'Train des Merveilles' – or Train of Marvels – to discover the hidden hills and valleys that surround the city of Nice. Trains run every two hours and the journey time is about the same.
- For a break from walking around town, try using Nice's public bike rental scheme. It's a great way to zip between attractions, and could help you work off some of that local food and wine you'll been eating too.
- There's no better way to end your day than at the grand Opera de Nice. In addition to opera, this acclaimed space also hosts ballet and music concerts, and is home to the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra.
Shopping in Nice
Like most major European cities, Nice has its fair share of major high street brands, department stores and designer boutiques – but there's much more here for shoppers to explore too.
Flower Market
The flower market at Cours Saleya is the ideal place to start your shopping trip in Nice. Wander around the market to experience the beautiful colours and smells on every corner.
Antiques
Head to Rue Cathérine Ségurane to discover the city's antiques district. Antiques hunters should allow a couple of hours to wander around here, though the Flea Market in Place Robilante is also worth a look.
Eating in Nice
Nice has an eclectic, sophisticated food culture to match the French capital, Paris. Restaurants in Nice serve everything from Chinese and Indian food to French classics and local Niçoise dishes.
Salad Niçoise
Every chef has a different take on this classic salad, although in Nice it's usually made with tuna rather than anchovies. Don't forget to try pan-bagnat – salad Niçoise in a roll – too.
Socca
This chickpea pancake is widely eaten in this region of France, though found outside it. It's tastiest when generously seasoned with salt, pepper and local herbs, and eaten hot.
Local wines
Most restaurants and wine bars in Nice stock up on wines from the surrounding region of Provence, which are among some of the country's best. Make sure you sample a glass or four before you leave town, and buy some to take home with you.
Insider's Tips
In the event of an emergency during your trip, call the European Emergency Number: 112.
Do your research before heading to the beach. Most of Nice's public beaches are lined with pebbles or stones rather than sand, though the waters are still inviting. Venture further out – towards Cannes, for example – for sandy alternatives.
Public transport in Nice is extensive, reliable and affordable, so it's the ideal way to get around the city. Find out more about public transport in Nice.

Getting from Nice Airport
By bus

By taxi
There are taxi ranks at both Terminals 1 and 2 at Nice Airport. Holidaymakers travelling further than Nice city centre should consider booking an airport transfer in advance.
By car
You don't need a car to travel around Nice, as it's best explored on foot or by public transport. But if you plan to make several trips to the surrounding areas, you can hire a car from a rental desk at the airport.
