Things to do in Naples

  1. Start your holiday in Naples with a wander around Centro Storico – the historic centre. This district is more than just a living museum: it's still a busy part of life in the city, so there are plenty of shops, restaurants and apartments that are still very much alive with people.
  2. The National Archaeological Museum – in Italian, Il Museo Archaeologico Nazionale di Napoli – is the most important of its kind in Italy. Brimming with important Roman artefacts, this museum is truly fascinating, whether you're a fan of classical history or not.
  3. Take a day trip to the world's most famous ruined city: Pompeii. Just 25km from Naples, Pompeii was annihilated when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Today, visitors can explore what's left of the city and gaze at its destroyer in the distance.
  4. Also just outside Naples are the ruins of Herculaneum, another ancient Roman town that perished when Vesuvius erupted. It's a smaller site than Pompeii but, some say, more interesting as a result.
  5. Back in the city, Castel Nuovo – a huge medieval castle – is an imposing site. Established in the 13th century, it's also known to Neapolitans as Maschio Angioino, and now houses the Civic Museum.
  6. It's a baby compared to its ancient cousins but the Palazzo Reale Napoli (Royal Palace of Naples) is still one the city's great historic attractions. It took over 100 years to complete but was finally finished in 1759. Take at least a day to wander around; its grand main staircase is particularly arresting.
  7. Venture underground and visit the Catacombs of San Gennaro, the oldest and most important catacombs in the city. Its lowest level is said to date back to the second century.
  8. Like every great Italian city, Naples has a fantastic range of art museums to explore. In the Palazzo Reale, you'll find the superb Museo di Capodimonte, while Madre is the city's premier contemporary art museum.
  9. When hunger strikes, turn to Naples' most famous export: pizza. You'll find great pizzerias on every corner of this city and everyone has their own favourite. You'll just have to go to several before making your own decision.
  10. Naples can be a busy, dirty city. Escape the grime and hop on a boat to the stunning island of Capri, or drive to the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Want to go further? Take a ferry from Naples to Palermo in Sicily to continue your Italian odyssey.
