Things to do in Faro

  1. Take a walk through Faro's fascinating Old Town. These cobbed streets offer up a slice of the city's history, with medieval buildings and remnants of Moorish rule.
  2. If you're having trouble getting your bearings, jump on the tourist train. This fun train journey leaves from outside the tourist office on Rua da Misericórdia every hour between 10am and 5pm (except 1pm), and ends here too.
  3. Situated near the airport, Praia de Faro is the town's main beach. It's a fantastically long and attractive stretch of golden sand, but can get very crowded in summer so venture elsewhere in the Algarve if you're looking for seclusion.
  4. If you fancy venturing underwater, book a diving trip with a trusted company like Hydroespaco. It's a great way to see Faro's diverse sealife. If you'd rather keep your head above water, many companies run boat trips too.
  5. Don't miss a visit to the stunning Se Cathedral, whose site has Roman and Moorish roots and whose architecture is an enticing mish-mash of Gothic and baroque styles.
